The history of The Farmer in the Dell

The Farmer in the Dell is an old nursery rhyme that has been sung in several different languages for nearly 200 years. The first documented use of the song dates back to 1826 in Germany, and it was probably brought to the United States by immigrants in the 1800s. It is often used as a courting game for children, and begins with a farmer in a dell (a small, wooded valley) who takes a wife. Like most old folk songs, The Farmer in the Dell has many variations in its lyrics.
