The history of Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Take Me Out to the Ball Game is one of the best known songs in the United States, and is sung at almost every baseball game in the middle of the seventh inning. It was composed in 1908 by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer who were Tin Pan Alley musicians based in New York. Ironically, neither of them had been to a baseball game up to that point (reportedly, neither of them saw a game until more than twenty years after they wrote the song). However, Norworth saw a sign from a subway train car advertising “Baseball Today - Polo Grounds,” and he was inspired to write the poem.




Von Tilzer set the words to music, and the song became a big hit on the vaudeville circuit. Despite its popularity, it was not played at baseball games until the mid 1930s. Usually, when the song is played at games, the only part that is sung is the chorus, which is shown in the sheet music below.
