Time Lines Melodic Phrases for Unit 5
Eighth Notes in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4

The Rhythm Patterns of Time Lines Unit 5 are all written on a single line staff and can be performed on one pitch. By changing the pitches of the notes, we can create a melody. The Melodic Phrases in this unit are short melodies that are four measures long and feature eighth notes combined with quarter notes, half notes, dotted half notes, and rests in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time signatures. Each Melodic Phrase corresponds to the Rhythm Pattern with the same number. For example, Melodic Phrase M501 has the exact same rhythm as Rhythm Pattern P501, and so on.

This page currently includes links to the Unit 5 Time Lines Melodic Phrases for concert band instruments. I will add the melodies for piano and recorder as soon as I can. Select a link below to hear and play along with melodies from Unit 5. Each webpage includes an audio example of the melody as well as the Time Lines Color Blocks to indicate the notes and rests. The sheet music for some of the melodic phrases can be viewed by visiting the Time Lines page for your instrument, listed below. You can also buy the book from those pages, which will allow you to see all of the sheet music for every melody, exercise, and pattern on the website in a clear, easy to follow format.

Clap and count each melody before playing it. Doing so will help your sense of rhythm and tempo, and it will ensure that you play the notes and rests correctly. For some reminders about clapping and counting longer notes, visit the Unit 4 Exercises page. If the tempos in these videos are too fast, visit the MetronomeBot metronome pages.
